Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need CPR for my route?

Yes. You must have a valid CPR certification to qualify for RDA certification. Your CPR training must include both theoretical instruction and an in-person, hands-on demonstration of CPR proficiency. A copy of the front and back of your valid CPR card is required when applying.

What counts as full-time work experience?

For RDA eligibility, full-time employment is defined as an average of 40 hours per week. A combination of qualifying part-time positions may be used to meet the required hours.

The amount and type of experience required depend on your eligibility route:

Military Route: One year (2,080 hours) of dental assisting experience within the past five years.

Work Experience Route: Three years (6,240 hours) of dental assisting experience within the past five years.

Instructor Route: Three years of full-time dental assisting teaching experience. Applicants with more than one year but fewer than three years of teaching experience must also document two years (4,160 hours) of qualifying clinical dental assisting experience within the past five years.

Qualifying experience should include duties normally performed by a dental assistant, such as preparing patients, sterilizing instruments, setting up instrument trays, assisting during dental procedures, maintaining patient records and supplies, providing oral-hygiene instructions, recording patient histories and vital signs, producing diagnostic radiographic images, and assisting with medical or dental emergencies.

Your employer must document the experience on the RDA Employment Verification Form. Job descriptions are not accepted in place of the completed form

What if I graduated more than 4 years ago?

If you graduated more than 4 years ago, email a copy of your transcripts, diploma, or certificate to documents@americanmedtech.org

Can I apply before graduation?

Yes, students in their final semester or those finishing their externship can begin the application process. However, final transcripts are needed after graduation.
