Education
How to Qualify
Applicant shall be a recent graduate or scheduled to graduate from an accredited Medical Administrative Specialist program* or a Medical Administrative Specialist program housed within an accredited institution.
- Must have 720 hours of instruction that includes at least 160 hours of externship
- Program must include the following content areas: medical records management, health care insurance processing, coding, office financial responsibilities, and information processing
*Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or otherwise approved by the AMT Board of Directors.
Required Documentation
If Recently Graduated:
- Official final transcript provided by the school, showing graduation from a Medical Administrative Specialist program
If Graduated 4+ Years Ago:
- Copy of transcripts showing graduation from a Medical Administrative Specialist program
- CMAS Employment Verification Form documenting three years of full-time experience within the last 5 years.
RMA Certificant
How to Qualify
Applicant shall be certified as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent
AND possess a minimum of two years of recent full-time experience working as a Medical Office Administrative Specialist.
- Work requirement is assumed to be full-time (40 hours per week). May be a combination of part time settings
Required Documentation
- CMAS Employment Verification Form documenting two years of full-time experience within the last 5 years.
Work Experience
How to Qualify
Applicant shall be employed as a Medical Office Administrative Specialist for a minimum of 5 years out of the past 7 years.
- Work requirement is assumed to be full-time (40 hours per week). May be a combination of part time settings.
Required Documentation
- A copy of your high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- CMAS Employment Verification Form documenting 5 years of full-time experience within the last 7 years.

Take the Exam
Once you receive approval notice from AMT, you can schedule your exam.
- If you are taking the exam at school, your instructor will provide the exam date and time.
- If you are taking the exam at a Pearson Professional Assessments testing center location, you will schedule your own exam.
